about

Come on in, they’ve been expecting you. If you were led here by the sounds of the Byrds, the delicate words of Gram Parsons, or the wonders of Neil Young then you have taken the right path. The Dreadful Yawns will be your new guide for the remainder of the journey.

Evoking the luscious Country Rock sound of psych luminaries, and the troubadour penmanship of folk geniuses is what this strange and sensual band have become known for . During their time on the Alternative Rock scene they garnered plaudits far and wide for 2003’s debut Early, and their self-titled follow up on the late Greg Shaw’s legendary Bomp! Records in 2005.

Now in a new home at Exit Stencil Recordings, chief songwriter Ben Gmetro and his band have explored their music’s outer limits, and come back with an album’s worth of material that redefines their influences.

The creation of Rest is a story full of u-turns, set backs and challenges that often mirror the turbulence of the band’s history. Recording took its toll. Four out of five of the Yawn’s original members quit during its making.

Despite the changing line-up Gmetro stayed at the helm of the band, constantly evolving his music and words to steer them towards a new horizon. The result? This reflective Cleveland county dreamer’s finest album to date.

By taking in Rest, listeners are welcomed into a textured hinterland filled with lush orchestrations, beautiful pedal steel, plucked guitar strings and full-bodied vocal melodies. It is modern Pysch Folk at its boldest. Tracks like, ‘Due South’, and ‘Changing States’, hold firm with their sparse beauty, while the amped banjo-fuelled drive of ‘Being Used to You’, jars against the grain. The group seems to be unpicking the lock to a room filled with chaotic energy and vigor.

Gmetro’s guitar and vocals sit wondrously in the arrangement, combining percussion, drums and strings for a tender organic feel - on Rest, Gmetro’s musical vision has segued from standard County and Folk sentiments to a loser, more adventurous manifestation of
The Dreadful Yawns.

From a crack in the door and the soul, the music of Rest pours out. To a casual passer by the enchanted melodies evoke the gone but not forgotten worlds of troubled Folk legends and Alternative Rock experimenters. But if you venture in and stay a while something new and wonderful will take you by the hand.
